Feel-Good Movies

Being a ‘90’s kid I have so many fond memories of watching rom-coms with my mom. After dinner we’d put our comfy clothing on (aka our head-to-toe J. Crew pajamas), she’d make her homemade popcorn with drizzled butter and we’d curl up on the couch under a chenille blanket. In the early days, we’d buy DVDs from Target, then we’d go to RedBox to rent movies and from there - well you all know how it goes!

When opting for movies we would seek out genres and titles that were a form of escapism. At the time, we needed it. My parents had gone through a challenging divorce, we’d moved to a new city and I’d started a new school. Movies were a sort of reprieve. We’d find solace and joy in the storylines, main characters’ banter, the interiors, and soothing soundtracks.

Like many my age, I grew up watching Nancy Meyers films. All of them. They’ve been a constant in my life, her films have provided inspiration, comfort, guidance, and laughter. She’s been a pivotal person that I admire and am eternally grateful for, side note I highly recommend reading the Architectural Digest article, “Tour Nancy Meyers newly renovated L.A. Home.” We also used to watch quite a few Nora Ephron films as well, I mean Meg Ryan just pulls you in.

Years later when I’m feeling off or needing a spark of inspiration I find myself revising these classics. Here’s a list of my feel-good movies, I hope no matter what you’re navigating in life they bring you comfort and joy.

Movie Night Must-Haves

In the words of Julie Andrews (Maria) from the ‘Sound of Music’ these are a few of my favorite things for the ultimate feel good movie night. Thanks to my mom for being the ultimate teacher in self-care. No matter where we lived she always made a house a home for our family. She creatively crafted a lifestyle full of thoughtful rituals and traditions.

I’m curious, what’re your feel good movies? Leave me a note in the comments, while I am a creature of habit I’d love to see what brings you joy, comfort and calm.
