The Holidays

The holiday season can be a joyous time of year, filled with family, friends, and celebration. However, it can also be a tough time of the year.

It's common to feel a range of emotions during this time, from love and happiness to sadness, loneliness, or feeling overwhelmed. I tend to enjoy the sentiment of the holidays; however, I feel a spectrum of emotions. The holidays are not only a time of love, joy, and celebration but can also trigger memories that can be challenging. Acknowledge and honor your emotions. As one of my girlfriends says, ‘Feel the feels.’ Over the years, I’ve found that giving myself grace, love, patience, and understanding is essential this season. Here are a few things I’m focusing on this holiday season that will allow me to enjoy it while still honoring my emotions.

Embrace cozy season

I love embracing the concept of 'hygge' - lighting candles, listening to soothing sounds, relaxing in comfy clothes, and indulging in warm drinks. I’m a homebody who puts effort into making my home comfortable. Winter provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy your space, romanticize your daily routines, and catch up on much-needed rest. Enjoying the simple everyday pleasures can help you slow down and savor the moment.

Participate in local events

The topic of loneliness has come up lately. For introverts, we enjoy our alone time to recharge but also desire time with others. I’ve found several community events this time of year, like Maker’s Markets, holiday pop-ups, and more. These events can be a great way to connect with others and feel the holiday spirit.

Prioritize health and well-being

It's okay to prioritize yourself and care for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Focusing on the basic human health needs is key to ensuring you’re feeling your best. Sleep well, stay hydrated, journal, move your body, and nourish yourself with healthy foods.

Make a calendar

Celebrations, events, and more can add up this time of year. Ahead of the month, create a calendar to visually see what you’ve committed to and check in with yourself to make sure it’s well balanced. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, try to simplify your holiday plans and focus on what you need.

Remember, the holidays are a time for joy and celebration but can also reflect and heal. Give yourself the love, grace, and compassion you deserve this season. However you may be feeling this holiday season, I hope you know you’re not alone. Here’s to a season of slow living and enjoying the everyday moments.
