How to Care for Your Clothes

When purchasing clothing and accessories I tend to opt for styles that are good quality, have a classic style, and are in neutral colorways that will withstand the test of time. In a day and age when we’re constantly tempted by new styles, brands, and deals it can be tempting to acquire more. Every season I love to take inventory of my closet and revive clothing that I already have. When working for The North Face I had the opportunity to visit The Renewal Workshop in Hood River, Oregon. There I learned what about the tools and techniques used to revive well-loved items, that have a lot of life left in them.

  1. Lint Roller: I use my lint roller daily, it’s a quick way to remove any access fuzz or hairs to give my items a clean, polished look. I’ve been using these for the past few years, they work great on leggings, tops, and sweaters without leaving a sticky residue.

  2. Handheld Fabric Shaver: This is one of my favorite tools! I use it on my sweaters, tops, and leggings to remove any pilling. It’s effective, yet gentle on delicate pieces!

  3. Hat Brush: I’m not sure what the technical term is, but a few years ago my mom gave me this brush to use on my beloved Rag & Bone felt hats. I love giving my hats a quick brush to remove any dust and hairs that might’ve settled, it works so well and my hats quickly look, hands down, good as new.

  4. Dry Cleaning: I love taking in my blouses and sweaters for a good seasonal dry clean. I love receiving a crisp, freshly pressed top. Putting it on can feel like a brand-new piece.

  5. Suede Protector Spray: I’ve found that spraying my boots before the wet, snowy season comes helps them maintain their color and texture much longer. This is my go-to, I’m sure there are others but this has been doing the trick.

Hope you’re able to fall back in love with and get many years of use out of items in your closet. Are there any other tools, spray, etc. you use to extend the longevity of your most beloved items? Let me know in the comments below.
